Alison Guthro, BACS, MACP, RCT-C

Alison is a Registered Counselling Therapist-Candidate, who has worked in programming roles in the social service sector for almost a decade. These work environments included residential group homes for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, long-term care for seniors and those with deteriorating conditions, the school system grades Primary-Twelve, both post-secondary support and early intervention behavioral and developmental therapy provision under Autism Nova Scotia. Alison pursued both an undergrad and masters focused on applied skill building, completing a Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies at Cape Breton University, and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University (accredited by the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists and Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association). Alison draws upon an ecclectic composition of therapeutic modalities, selecting the most appropriate combination based on the client at hand. Her frequently chosen theoretical frameworks include Narrative Therapy, Acceptance-Commitment Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Attachment and Psychodynamic Therapy, Solutions-Focused Therapy, and the Polyvagal Theory. Alison integrates Family Systems theory when supporting a family unit, and infuses all her work with cultural humility, trauma-informed care, person-centred and strengths-based counselling. Due to Alison’s broad work experience, she does not exclude any population from her therapeutic offerings. She is keen to work with all persons across the lifespan, from toddlers to seniors. Alison particularly enjoys supporting behaviours that challenge in children, parents experiencing stress, existential questions (e.g., What is my purpose in life?), workplace burnout, and trauma.
